So if your planning to go golfing in the northeast and you find yourself in the country’s smallest state, Rhode Island, than you might want to check out these courses.

Starting in Portsmouth, the Montaup Country Club is an 18-hole semi private course that is open year round for the diehard golf enthusiast. New England Golf Monthly ranked Montaup among its top 25 public courses in their May 2011 issue.

Moving south to the city of Newport is Newport Country Club. In 1895 the club hosted both the first U.S. Amateur Championship and the first U.S. Open. In 1995, in celebration of the U.S. Amateur Championship centennial, Newport Country Club hosted the 1995 U.S. Amateur Championship, which was won by Tiger Woods. Newport Country Club was also the location of the 2006 U.S. Women’s Open.

If you’re in the southwest part of the state than you should check out Beaver River Golf Course. This is a public 18-hole golf course located in Richmond. Beaver River Golf Club opened in 2001 and is one of Rhode Island’s most scenic and challenging public daily fee golf courses. Located in South County, 3 miles from Interstate 95, the Par 70, 6006-yard course offers a unique challenge to the experienced and beginner golfer.
