Indiana is filled with fabulous golf courses that offer a variety of experiences. With nearly 470 golf courses located throughout the state, Indiana offers golfers of all skill levels a variety of options on courses designed by some of the biggest names in golf including Pete Dye, Jim Fazzio, Robert Trent Jones, Donald Ross, and Fuzzy Zoeller.

A couple of years ago my dad and I made it up to Indiana to attend the world famous Indianapolis 500. I have to say that if you like racing then the 500 is a must see, but you know what this is not a racing blog. However, during our stay we did squeeze in a round at Southern Dunes Golf Course.

Designed by Gary Player in 2003, Southern Dunes Golf Course features 18 championship holes and a 9 hole par 3 course located 15 minutes south of Indianapolis. Southern Dunes also includes a practice facility that is the finest in the city. The driving range which is open 364 days a year, has a large grass teeing area 6 target greens, and 7 covered gas heated stalls with vinyl wind protection to keep you warm in the winter months (although I was not there when it was cold). Southern Dunes also has 2 large outdoor putting greens and chipping areas for you to sharpen your short game skills.

If you are looking for a play and stay place, or formally known as a resort then The Fort Golf Resort might be right up your ally. Pete Dye and Tim Liddy redesigned the Fort. In 1998, The Fort Golf Course was ranked third under “Best Affordable New Public Courses” in Golf Digest. Today The Fort is considered one of Indiana’s best public golf courses and a great place to host a special event.

If your in Fort Wayne, then I am told that Sycamore Hills Golf Club is a must play. It is said that, Sycamore Hills Golf Club is positioned among the finest golf clubs in America. The holes flow effortlessly along the rolling hills, and the narrow Aboite River flows gently through tall sycamores, burr oak, and spruce, skirting greens and fairways.

Lastly, if you’re in the Gary region of Indiana then you might want to head south for 30 minutes to Crown Point and play at White Hawk Country Club. White Hawk Country Club, founded in 1996, is one of the most highly-rated semi-private public golf courses in the state of Indiana. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Chicago, it is easy to see why this course is ranked as one of Indiana’s ten most difficult courses. The 7,300-yard, par-72 course will test the skill level of any golfer. Carved out of 600 acres of woods, prairies, creeks and wetlands, this natural picturesque setting features 7 large lakes and bent grass from tee to green.
