West Virginia, either way you look at it is the southern most northern state and the northern most southern state. One actual fact is that West Virginia has the oldest population out of any state. The median age of West Virginians is 40 years old. Now that’s not considered old and I’m not trying to offend anyone, but that begs the question of whether or not there are any good course to be played. Well, it just so happens that I have the answer, and it is yes.

One of my favorites is the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport. Opened in 1995, Pete Dye Golf Club is considered as one of the top golf courses of the modern era. The course features remnants of coal mining activity, including exposed, strip mined high walls, a rotary car tipple, coal-laden mine cars, a cart path through a once deep mine, and waterfalls that originate from deep mining activity of days gone by.

The golf course occupies 250 acres, nearly twice the land utilized for the average golf course design. A pleasurable experience for golfers of all skill levels is ensured with wide fairways and landing areas, unobstructed green approaches, and a safe route on every hole. For those who seek a challenge, the safe route can be traded for a variety of risk-reward shot making opportunities.

Another one of my favorites is Olgebay in Wheeling. Oglebay is truly a golfer’s paradise with four golf courses including two championship courses. The newest championship course, which opened in 2000, is a modern links layout designed by Arnold Palmer and our classic Robert Trent Jones, Sr. designed championship course continues to be one of West Virginia’s premier layouts. During the lazy summer days when long hours of daylight allow for a second, or even a third round of golf, Oglebay’s courses will provide enough challenges and spectacular scenery to please the most discriminating golfer.

These two courses are only a small description of what West Virginia offers to the golfing world. Other great courses can be found in Morgantown, Clarksburg, Fairmount, Beaver, and across rest of the state.
